Restoration Underway — Historic Lansdowne Theater to Become a Major Concert Venue

Opened in 1927, the historic Lansdowne Theater celebrates the 90th anniversary in 2017.  Designed by noted theater architect William H. Lee in the Hollywood Moorish style the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is in the process of being restored.
Sitting at the center of Lansdowne’s historic central business district, The Lansdowne has entertained thousands of movie patrons, was the site of high school graduations, and hosted bond drives during World War II.  Today, the retail spaces in the theater building are the homes of The Regency Café and Vinyl Revival, a popular record store.  The theater’s marquee and outdoor lobby have been restored.

The Lansdowne is one the last of the great theaters from the 1920s left in the Philadelphia region and is poised to be restored and reopened as a major concert venue featuring nationally known singer songwriters, classic rock and adult alternative music.  Area non-profit performing arts organizations including orchestras and opera will also present concerts in this unique venue.
While funds are raised to restore the theater, the non-profit owner Historic Lansdowne Theater Corporation produces concerts, comedy shows and regularly offers tours of the building that are open to the public.

To support the campaign to restore The Lansdowne and to learn of upcoming events at the theater visit www.LansdowneTheater or go to “Save the Lansdowne Theater” on Facebook.

Rose Tree Park Concerts

One of the state’s most beautiful amphitheaters is located in Delaware County’s Rose Tree Park.  And every year since 1975, the County has sponsored a Free Summer Concert Series.  These free concerts were started as part of a two-year Bicentennial Celebration, and four decades later, The Summer Festival concert series remains a hugely popular local tradition drawing thousands of people each year.

The series runs from mid-June to mid-August and provides residents many opportunities to take in top-notch entertainment of all kinds, from Classical to Cajun, Motown to Broadway, Doo Wop to Rock and Pop, and everything in between. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday through Sunday evenings, plus two children's shows at 10:00 a.m.

Bring family and friends, along with a blanket or lawn chair.  Concessions are sold at all concerts or you may bring your own tasty provisions. Please remember that alcoholic beverages are prohibited throughout the park, and for everyone's safety and comfort, pets and smoking must remain outside the amphitheater. There is no admission charge for the concerts which are brought to you by Delaware County Council and the generous support of local sponsors.

The Tower Theater

The Tower Theater in Upper Darby is one of the most iconic symbols of rock and pop music in the mid-Atlantic states.  The theater operates under the Live Nation/Electric Factory Concerts name and dozens of top contemporary stars like John Legend and Mary Jane Blige have rocked its stage. In fact, since the 1970s, it’s iconic towering marquee has read like a who’s who of rock and roll and Billboard chart-toppers.  Famous for its amazing acoustic properties, several top bands used it to record live albums and videos, including David Bowie and The Average White Band.

Midnight Sun Concerts promoted its first concert at the Tower on June 24th, 1972 – it was Dave Mason and Buzzy Linhart – a whopping sell out. Reviewer Jonathan Takiff in the Philadelphia Daily News announced in the next day's paper that "Philly Finally has its Fillmore", making reference to New York's famed Fillmore East.

Midnight Sun's president, Rick Green, and his stage manager, Upper Darby native Billy Stevenson, were instrumental in adapting the Tower for that role. Their concerts became the stuff of local legend. The Tower introduced America to David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars in 1972, as well as the then-unknown Genesis with Peter Gabriel that same year; Genesis played a midnight concert with a $4 admission price.

Bruce before Born to Run

In September 1974, Bruce Springsteen – who had an early, strong, and long-lived fan base in Philadelphia – introduced the world to his new E Street Band, with Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan, at the Tower Theater. It was the first time in his career that Springsteen earned $5,000 for a night's work. He returned in early November for two sold-out shows; it would still be a year before his big breakthrough with Born to Run and the attendant publicity.

Other regular headliners included Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Steve Miller, and various editions of the Jerry Garcia/Merle Saunders band. Prince also performed here in 1982 and 1997.
